Welcome
…the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children’s minds and spirits. That is why in any civilization--ours included--the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term ‘education.’ We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge in the arts.

Character and creativity are cultivated through our comprehensive, award-winning Fine and Performing Arts programs. Students are provided the opportunity to participate in various disciplines and study under teaching artists who continue to work professionally in their field.
At Greensboro Day School, students in the Lower School experience a full music and visual arts curriculum. This is supplemented with the opportunity to participate in after-school Suzuki lessons and high-quality drama productions.
In Middle School, 5th and 6th grade students participate in the full slate of arts offerings, each taking a quarter of chorus, visual art, drama, and instrumental music. 7th and 8th graders then choose two arts electives in which to focus, including strings, drama, band, chorus, and visual art (with a special ceramics option for 8th grade). Students also have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular musical theatre and to further their arts studies through numerous clubs.
By Upper School, drama, music, and art students perform at an advanced level, enjoying a broad selection of courses and extracurricular opportunities. Drama students can participate in three extracurricular theatre productions annually. They have won Superiors at the NC Thespian Festival and have been fortunate enough to be chosen to perform at Lincoln Center in one-night-only Broadway concerts multiple times. Music students compete and perform at venues throughout the state and Carnegie Hall in NYC, and our Jazz Band has recorded their own CD. Visual Arts students experiment with the most current techniques and media, working with everything from monoprinting to digital design to using our campus darkroom. We also have a one-of-a-kind ceramics program with our own wood-fired kiln on campus.
All arts programs bring in artists and programs for master classes regularly. Performances occur in the Davison Center for the Arts, which has a fully outfitted 600 seat proscenium theatre with a fly system (Sloan Theatre) and a flexible black box theatre (Bell Family Studio Theatre). Technicians learn their craft with updated equipment and technology. Our alumni include professional musicians, actors, artists, photographers, technicians, playwrights, composers, and arts administrators.
