College Counseling

The mission of the College Counseling Department at Greensboro Day School is to stimulate self-reflection and personal growth in our students and help each student find a school that is a good fit and will support his or her continued growth toward adulthood.

Beginning in 9th grade, the College Counseling staff connects with students formally through First-year Foundations and informally through sports, clubs and the arts, so that when students start the college process, we have already established a relationship. Continuing in 10th and 11th grade, we educate students about the skills they will need for a successful college-search process: organization and planning, interviewing, essay writing and decision making. We offer resources to students and families that will guide them through the entire process.

We believe that the college-search process is rooted in self-discovery and focused on finding a school that is the right fit for the student- academically, socially, and financially. Throughout this time of inquiry and transition, students will learn to think creatively and explore options they may not have previously considered. Throughout their junior and senior years, students will become increasingly responsible for managing their college search. As students take ownership of the process, with the support of parents, advisors and college counselors, they will develop their critical thinking, effective communication, self-advocacy and relationship building skills. These skills are vital as they transition from high school to college life and beyond.
