Our Mission
The Visual Arts Department at Greensboro Day School provides a means for students to realize their creative potential by offering a personalized and rigorous learning environment, fostering experiential education, and contributing to the cultural enrichment of a global society in the 21st century. The Visual Arts Department is committed to making the arts a vital, accessible, innovative, and integral part of the intellectual and cultural life of Greensboro Day School students.
Our Program
The Visual Arts Department at GDS strives to provide students with tools that will enable them to build critical thinking skills and confidence while embracing the process of art production. A dynamic variety of courses are offered in state-of-the-art facilities by a faculty of highly qualified working artists. The curriculum is vertically aligned, as concepts and skills learned are continued and built upon in a comprehensive and sequential manner. Whether through a lump of clay, a blank canvas, or the use of digital media, our program provides students with an appreciation for the arts and a passion for creative expression.
Learning Outcomes
The Visual Arts Department has four learning goals for all students, which build upon the mission statement of GDS:
Through the Visual Arts, students will:
- Communicate and collaborate effectively
- Develop critical and creative thinking skills
- Build the confidence needed for innovation and risk-taking
- Embrace global awareness, personal responsibility, and artistic integrity
