Sports Medicine - Athletic Training

Greensboro Day School has a long tradition of providing high quality sports medicine care to its student athletes.

Our Certified Athletic Trainers

List of 1 members.

Our two certified athletic trainers have over 40 years of experience in the field of Sports Medicine and cover our 17 sports and more than 40 teams at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels. The Sports Medicine Facility/Training Room is located at ground level within our Dillard Athletic Complex.

During practices and home games, a certified athletic trainer is available to evaluate injuries and provide immediate and follow up care. Our certified athletic trainers also serve as Associate Clinical Instructors for our local colleges and universities. This allows additional opportunities for care and mentoring. The directly supervised graduate and undergraduate students from local universities and colleges are another set of eyes and ears, often bringing our on-site "staff" to 4-5 persons.

Athletic trainers and athletic training students, also educate the Greensboro Day School community about nutrition, healthy living, first aid, CPR, and the effects of harmful substances. The sports medicine program also allows our own students to assist with the everyday operations of the athletic training room, on-field practice, and game coverage through our Student Athletic Training and Sports Medicine class.

Greensboro Day School Receives National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School Award for 3rd consecutive period!
2014 - 2017   &   2017 - 2020  &  2020 - 2023
This program recognizes high schools that help to keep young athletes safe.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment.

Jon Schner, LAT-ATC, Head of Sports Medicine at Greensboro Day School: “Greensboro Day School is honored to receive this 1st Team level recognition from NATA. We remain committed to keeping our student athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices, and games so they can accomplish their own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship, and good health. The goal of our two NATA Certified Athletic Trainers is to lead our athletics program to the highest safety standards as we support our players and coaches.”

Physical activity is very important for our youth, according to NATA president Jim Thornton, MS, ATC, CES. “There has been an increase in competitive sports, which are unfortunately not without risk. Brain injury/concussion, cardiac arrest, heat illness, exertional sickling, cervical spine fractures, and other injuries and illnesses are potentially life-threatening.” Proper planning with proper equipment and personnel is vital to the safety of student athletes today, he notes.

In order to achieve Safe Sport School status, as Greensboro Day School did, athletic programs must do the following:

  • Create a positive athletic healthcare administrative system
  • Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations
  • Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities
  • Plan for selection, fit, function, and proper maintenance of athletic equipment
  • Provide a permanent, appropriately-equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes
  • Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
  • Provide or facilitate injury intervention
  • Create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan
  • Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education
  • Be sure athletes and parents are educated of the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities
