Freddy Johnson has served at Greensboro Day School as the Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach since 1977 and the Athletic Director since 1978. He has overseen the growth of the athletic department, adding new sports over his many years. His commitment to the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) and our Piedmont Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (PACIS) is evident in his years of leadership within both organizations.

Short Bio:Freddy Johnson has served at Greensboro Day School as the Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach since 1977 and the Athletic Director since 1978. His coaching accomplishments include being the winningest high school basketball coach in North Carolina, celebrating his 950th win during the 2015-16 season. He has led the Bengals to a record 14 tournament championships in the HAECO Invitational Tournament, a premier tournament showcasing local high school teams in Guilford County, 8 NCISAA State Championships, 8 NCISAA Finalists, and 24 PACIS Conference Championships. He has been the PACIS Conference Coach of the Year 21 times and was named the USA Today North Carolina Coach of the Year in 2015. He has coached in six all-star games, including the 2013 McDonald’s All-American Game in Chicago and the 1997 Capital All-Star Classic in Washington, DC. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in May, 2016.
