GDS Names New Director of Security

We are thrilled to announce that Captain Steve Tollie will serve as our new Director of Security effective July 1. Steve is a North Carolina native who began his career in law enforcement after graduating magna cum laude from Lees-McRae College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice.

During his 28-year career with the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD), Steve’s assignments included 9 years as a Detective in the Vice & Narcotics Unit and 13 years serving in various supervisory ranks within the Criminal Investigations Division. He is the recipient of numerous accolades and certificates of achievement, including an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and membership in the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Institute for Police.

Steve will retire from WSPD on June 1. As Captain, he served as commander of the Criminal Investigations Division, the Violent Firearm Investigations Team, and the Real Time Crime Center. Steve’s references all noted his attention to detail, knowledge of law and procedure, and his genuine desire to serve those whom he has been charged with protecting.

Steve notes his greatest joy in life is spending time with his wife, Lori. Steve is an avid lover of music and laughter. In his spare time, he can be found exploring the great outdoors or the small fishing towns on the North Carolina coast.

We are grateful for Dennis Smith’s 14 years of service to GDS and were happy to honor him during our Faculty & Staff Luncheon on May 26. We also thank Calvin Davenport in advance for serving as the campus security point person during the month of June until Captain Tollie joins GDS on July 1.
