2020 Top Teacher Honored


Congratulations to Mr. Kyle Gilmer, Incoming Middle School Dean of Student Life, Health and Wellness/Physical Education teacher, and Baseball Coach who was named the 2020 James P. Hendrix, Jr. Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient during the end of year faculty meeting on Tuesday, May 26. This award was presented by Mrs. Kelly Sipe, the 2019 Hendrix Award recipient. 
 
The Hendrix award was established in honor of Greensboro Day School’s 4th headmaster and is presented annually to the faculty member who exemplifies the highest standards of teaching and professionalism.
 
Mr. Gilmer is known throughout the GDS community for being a good listener; having respect for students, faculty, and parents; and patience with all constituents. He is said to instill confidence, develop relationships, and is seen as a motivator and an inspiration. Many nominations included that he has made an important difference for many students, peers, and parents. Mr. Gilmer shows a deep passion for work during the school day and well into most evenings after school through his coaching and extracurricular activities.  
 
He has been an integral member of the Greensboro Day School community for 14 years. He started at GDS as a part-time coach and became a full-time faculty member in 2012.
 
Mr. Gilmer is married to Stephanie Gilmer and they are the parents of Noah ‘28 and Boston ‘30.
